This will be a 2.5 day sesshin at Sheringham YHA, Norfolk to be led by Senior Zen Teacher Taiun Jean-Pierre Faure

Led by:

Taiun Jean-Pierre Faure, born 1945, is the father of three children. He holds a PhD in physics and has been practising zazen since 1977. He was ordained a monk by Master Deshimaru in 1981. He created the Marrakech Dojo and then became head of the Toulon Dojo. From 1997 to 2002 he was the head of La Gendronniére Temple. Twenty years after the death of Master Taisen Deshimaru, he received dharma transmission from Master Donin Minamisawa Zenji, Head of Eiheji Temple in Japan, and became a certied teacher in the Soto Zen school. Today he is the Founding Abbot of Kanshoji Temple at La Coquille near Limoges in France (www.kanshoji.org).

About the Sesshin:

Arrival – Thursday 19th February 2026 – from 16:00 (meal at ~20:00)

Departure – Sunday 22nd February 2026 – at about 3:30pm – after lunch and clean up. Please plan on staying for clean-up — we will need your help.  There is an option to stay overnight at no extra cost, departing by 10.00am Monday 23rd February.

The Youth Hostel is situated in Sheringham, off the A149 Coast Road, behind St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. The Sheringham Youth Hostel is only a 5 minute walk from the Sheringham Train Station.

Directions:

Take the train directly to Sheringham. Trains run from Norwich once an hour (www.greateranglia.co.uk). National Express Coach and Megabus services both go to Norwich where you can take the bus or train to Sheringham. Bus Nos. 44, 44a, X44, X40 run every 30 minutes. If you are planning to drive please check if you can share your car with others from your group.

Cost:

Recommended: £200 (Friends of IZAUK);  £220 (Non-members)
Low wage: £175 (Friends);  £195 (Non-members)
Unwaged: £145 (Friends);  £165 (Non-members)
Those able to book and pay (either £25 deposit or in full) before the 5th of February will receive a £20 discount.

All money in the Bursary Fund is donated by other members, so sometimes we may be able to give, sometimes we may need to receive.

What to bring:

  • Dark, loose-fitting clothes for zazen
  • a zafu and zafuton (meditation cushion and mat) – if you have one (some spares will be available to borrow)
  • clothes for samu (work in the kitchen, cleaning or gardening)
  • indoor slippers/shoes
  • 3 nesting bowls (largest around 13cm) – oryoki bowls if you have them
  • chopsticks, a spoon, a cloth to wrap them in
  • your own mug
  • Also, clothes for work in the kitchen, gardens, etc.
